Luhrmann the shit out of his Shakespeare, turning it into a messy, trippy pastiche of modern-day gang violence and rave culture. All of the colors were flamboyant. The pacing was frenetic. The dialogue was still in verse, because it was the ’90s, and that was the cool thing to do? It was big and audacious and batshit in a brave way.
