The third paragraph of the body should include the weakest argument, weakest example, weakest illustration, or an obvious follow up to the second paragraph in the body. The first sentence of this paragraph should contain the reverse hook, which ties in with the transitional hook at the end of the second paragraph. The topic for this paragraph should be in the first or second sentence. This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. The last sentence in this paragraph should include a transitional concluding hook that signals the reader that this is the final major point being made in this essay. This hook also leads into the concluding paragraph.
A classic format for compositions is the five-paragraph essay
Thesis Statement: Regular exercise releasestension, improves appearance, and increases stamina.
I. One benefit is the release of tension.
A. An overaccumulation of adrenaline producestension.
B. Exercise or active participation in sportsreleases tension.
II. Another benefit is an improved appearance.
A. The figure becomes more firm and trim.
B. Clothes look better.
C. Skin may become clearer.
III. Still another benefit is increased stamina.
A. Better muscle tone and strength improveperformance.
B. One may be better able to ward off illness.
Please note: This outline omits the introduction andconclusion paragraphs. Since the outline's primary purpose is to identify mainideas and support, omitting the introduction and conclusion makes sense. Themain idea of the introduction is already expressed in the thesis statement, andits support emerges from all of the body paragraphs. Similarly, the main idea ofthe conclusion is a reinforcement of the thesis, and its real support also liesin the body paragraphs. Nevertheless, you should not approach the writing ofyour introduction and conclusion paragraphs casually. You need to recognizetheir special purposes, and choose the methods that will best suit your purposesin a particular essay.
