Thanks for comment. It is inappropriate, in my opinion, in serious writing (and in almost all forms of communication, for that matter). It is used in the essay as an example because it is common in speech as metaphor, but in creating literary stories, it reflects both poor writing and storytelling . . . and should not be used with the argument it defines character through dialogue the character would use–an argument that indicates poor authorial choice.
Again, thanks. WHC
Kimball, Roger. Writes Kimball, "From our vantage point at the end of the millennium (maybe it should be called our "disadvantage" point), the extraordinary literary and critical authority that Eliot once commanded is almost incomprehensible." The October 1999.
1984 By George Orwell English Literature Essay
The will of Winston is the will of an individual, and represents Orwell’s own desperate reaction to the totalitarian governments that he saw coming to power at this time. Winston sees an evil as Orwell does, and seeks to resist it in any way that’s possible. The will of the individual, Winston, is going against the will of the majority, the Party. This illustrates how fruitless Orwell saw communist government, where the will of the majority was not the will of the majority, but of the majority leaders. The will of the majority in 1984 is to keep total order through any means necessary, and the majority leaders do not consider the well being of the majority in the majority’s best interest. Orwell illustrates a very “silly” government, and appears to make mockery of the effectiveness of these governments.

Beginning writers often spend years seeking the right sound for their dialogue. Sound is important, but only when the dialogue fulfills a primary purpose of doing something important for the story. There are many ways to make the dialogue sound good. To be aware of the sound, it may help to read out loud, and if you’re serious, record and listen to yourself. Always remember the dialogue in fiction is not the way people speak, yet, paradoxically, it has to seem to be the way people speak. How to do that? First, there has to be a natural rhythm to the context in which the speech is given. If dialogue is related to an audience with the Pope, speech patterns will differ from those in a bar conversation with Jelly Roll Morton. When writing, notice how the same content can have incredibly different rhythmic presentations. Create alternatives, choose the best for your writing and story. Musicality is more important in some styles than others, it is always present, but it must not dominate when story-purpose of dialogue might be lost.

Hammer, Langdon. In the first of three lectures on T.S. Eliot, "The early poetry of T.S. Eliot is examined. Differences between Pound and Eliot, in particular the former's interest in translation versus the latter's in quotation, are suggested. Eliot's relationship to tradition is considered in his essay, 'Tradition and the Individual Talent.' The early poem, 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock' is read, with emphasis on the poem's resistance to traditional forms and its complicated depiction of its speaker's fragmentary consciousness" [3 lectures]. The challenge of creating your own effective dialogue will not come from copying some writer you love to read. Of course, read and learn. And then practice. But in the long run, you will need to make many decisions about dialogue in your stories. These decisions–essential for voice, movement, clarity, purpose, and credibility–are based on how you think about and create fictional stories, and can only be solved by you. You are the creator, and when you succeed, your writing will be well received, and you will have found your own unique style.
