Adding words in quoted text: if you're adding material (possibly for clarity) put brackets [ ] around the material to acknowledge it is not a part of the quote
Omitting words: If you take out words in order to say, make the quote grammatical with the rest of the sentence, use an ellipsis (...).

An article in a scholarly journal

N.B. "Vol" indicates the volume number of the journal. If the journal usescontinuous pagination throughout a particular volume, only volume and year are needed,e.g. Modern Fiction Studies 39 (1993).: 156-174.
